I'm just a sysadmin, so I hack sloppy code that kinda works and then I move on. I'm using an LLM to spit out the basic bones of a script. I find it frequently does these structures where it opens with a <code>try:</code> has tons and tons of lines of code (even with more <code>try</code>'s in them, and then puts the top-level <code>except:</code> near the bottom of the function.I prefer to do something like:<pre><code>try: do_thing() except Exception as e: # handle the error return </code></pre>For me, I don't like having the bulk of the function indented 4 spaces because basically the whole function is inside a single giant <code>try/except</code> block.The LLM is writing stuff like:<pre><code>try: do_something() try: do_next_thing() # 50 more lines of stuff except Exception as e: handle_inner_exception() return except Exception as e: handle_outer_exception() return </code></pre>The LLM wouldn't output code like this unless it had a lot of examples like this in its training data. So is there some benefit to doing it this way?I'm mostly annoyed by the aesthetic. I don't like having so much code shifted way to the right. It's clear that both approaches work.
