Mostly, we see these guys on the sand.

But here is a flock of them on the wing.

What gets the most attention in this shot is the white V pointing backward on the jet-black tails.

The wings of each bird are raised at a different angle.

We can see their grey bellies and their white necks and some of their black heads aiming away from us.

In this photo, we see the bird's yellow underside, striking tail, and gracefully curved wings nearly touching over its head.

The bird is taking off from the tip of a branch that is reaching sidewise toward the left, so it looks as if in the photo the top of the frame is on the left, but the bush under the branch validates that up is up.

Anna's hummingbirds - the all-green ones - are resident all year round here.

Allen's (the orange and green ones) show up for just a little while starting in early spring.

This lovely Allen's is posed on a bare branch of the bottle brush in our nearby park. Its beak is slightly open but it is not feeding, far as I can tell, so I choose to think it's singing. (Which sounds to us like a series of clicks.)

This photograph was taken on one of those rare sunny days on the coast.

Guess the heat was getting to them because instead of their usual frenetic flapping around, many of the local songbirds just hung out in the raspberry bushes and sang to us. Like this one.

(Well, maybe it was to propose wedding plans to their significant others, but anyway, I took lots of photos.)

#OTD 3/23/19 #birds #birding #aBirdAday (or more) Bald eagle at Horseshoe Farm Preserve

#AltText We expect to see bald eagles in Alaska. And we have. But also, we pretty much see at least one bald eagle every time we visit North Carolina. We don't always have an opportunity to photograph the bald eagles we see in NC, because we are often not expecting to see them.

We saw this one in the cloudless skies after a wonderful bird walk at Horseshoe Farm Preserve was over. Later that same day, another bald eagle swooped down low over our car as we drove home.
