#OnThisDay, 8 Jun 1944, Violette Szabo returns to occupied France by parachute for her second posting with the British Special Operations Executive.

She is captured two days later, after a gun battle. She's tortured and sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp. She is killed in Jan 1945.

Her daughter Tania received the George Cross on her behalf in 1947.

Violette Szabo's story was filmed as Carve Her Name With Pride (1958).

From Holden Thorpe’s Editorial in the May 8, 2025 issue of #Science , quoting Danielle Allen, #Harvard Professor of Political ‘Science’, #Democracy and #Philosophy who argues for a new “‘horizontal’ relationship between #universities and the #American people - one that is based on mutual respect and reciprocity. She also makes a compelling call for universities to do a better job of expressing appreciation for the support of #HigherEducation in the decades since #WorldWar2.”

#OnThisDay, 23 May 1944, Madeleine Lavigne parachutes back into occupied France as a wireless operator for the British Special Operations Executive. She'd previously worked for the resistance as a forger and courier.

Radio operators ran the greatest risk of detection, as their position could be triangulated when they were on air.

She died in Paris of an embolism.
