Electric bass pioneer Monk Montgomery as a young man traveled cross country with a double bass to play with legend Lionel Hampton’s band in 1952. When he arrived he was told by Hampton he had to switch to a Fender electric bass, then a novelty, or go home. Angry but unwilling to give up a chance to play with Hampton he practiced for two weeks until he could do the job. He did it and became a #jazz legend himself. (Brother of Wes Montgomery.)
