Something that tells me why a post/user appeared on my instance. Is it:

  • An account someone follows
  • An account that @'d one of my users
  • An account/post that was linked to by a post visible for another reason
  • An account/post that was searched for
  • A post from an account someone follows
  • A post that was interacted with by an account that someone follows

Knowing this helps with deciding whether something is spam. The info exists but is hard to find

As per FediDB there are still almost 400 instances running on the 4.1 branch, most of them on older versions than the latest 4.1.24 security fix. There are even quite a few instances running even older branches. In total around 10% of all instances are running on (soon to be) unsupported versions of Mastodon.

We need to clean up on this act.

To follow on from yesterday's post, servers naturally see more of the Fediverse as their members follow accounts on other servers. If this is happening too slowly for you, there are also ways to more quickly increase the amount of accounts and posts your server can see:

You can also see a complete list of scenarios which make servers notice accounts and posts here:

So I used atop as baby's first general history vibe check tool of my VPSes (especially the $1/month one that runs my hollo instance).
Since atop apparently has some worrying issue right now, what are alternatives with minimal footprint that let you just get a general vibe check of how the situation on a server has been for the past few hours to days? Stuff like cpu steal, periods of high i/o latency, if an unexpected process has risen to top cpu or ram usage. that kind of stuff.

Are you using BunnyCDN? Here's a small tip that may not do much, but it can do something:

Go to one of your Pull Zones then select Edge Rules. Create a new one called "AI" or whatever you want to name it.

Then:

┌ Action: Block
├ Conditions: Request Header
├ Header name: User-Agent
└ Property:
:transparent: ├ *spider*
:transparent: ├ *ai*
:transparent: ├ *bot*
:transparent: ├ *crawler*
:transparent: └ *gpt*

Save and check a few days later to see the usage graphs going down.
