"If you view vaccination as an individual choice and believe that anyone should be able to opt out for any reason at any time, then what you’re saying is that it’s okay to decide not to uphold your end of the social contract; that it’s okay to free-ride off of everyone else who actually did go get vaccinated."

She responds to CDC:

"The truth is, when it comes to public health, there really isn’t such a thing as a 'personal' or 'individual' choice — because every choice we make as individuals has implications for the health of those around us. Framing vaccination as an issue of 'personal choice' disregards the fact that choosing not to get vaccinated ultimately strips other people of their personal choice to stay healthy or to live a normal life."

Caroline Orr Bueno reports that ProPublica contacted the CDC to ask why it suppressed a report warning that the risk of measles is higher in areas near outbreaks where vaccination rates are lower.

CDC responded,

“The decision to vaccinate is a personal one." As Bueno notes, this echoes HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s own language about vaccination.

“Although it is still unclear precisely how herpes zoster vaccination lowers the risk of dementia, the implications of the study are profound. The vaccine could represent a cost-effective intervention that has public-health benefits strongly exceeding its intended purpose.”

"President Donald Trump and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. put the nation at risk today and made us all far less safe by firing thousands of dedicated public health, medical and scientific staff across multiple agencies at HHS."

In response to the mass firings at HHS about which we've learned today, David Corn of MSNBC addresses Senator Cassidy of Louisiana who strongly supported RFKJr.'s confirmation:

“Sen. Bill Cassidy, you violated the Hippocratic oath when you supported RFK Jr.’s nomination and you own this—and all the horrific consequences to come.”

"Trump has no intention of stopping him because MAGA hates vaccines and has no confidence in public health authorities. He has an open field to conduct a virtual laboratory experiment designed to prove that insanity is an effective substitute for sound science & decades of public health research and experience,

Kennedy has serious emotional and mental problems and is unfit to lead an agency of this importance."

"Robert F. Kennedy Jr. assured the Senate that he would not interfere in the public’s right to secure vaccines. He lied. He has taken several steps to end public-private partnerships in the vaccine development area. He promised no major changes at HHS and FDA. He lied."

Two good reports on the measles situation in the US and how officials are (not) addressing it:

Patricia Callahan noting that the CDC buried a measles forecast stressing need for vaccination:

And Stephanie Kirchgaessner on the resignation of Dr. Peter Marks, top US vaccine official, in protest over RFKJr's misinformation:

"The federal government reported on Friday that there have been 483 confirmed cases of measles across 20 US jurisdictions so far this year, with the largest outbreak in Texas, and 70 people across the nation needing to be hospitalized.

That compares with 285 cases of measles in the US for the whole of 2024."
