WMO on the importance of early warning systems, like those run by the defunded NOAA:

“Early warning systems have proved to be efficient systems that governments can use to move communities out of harm's way before a disaster or manage the event in situ.

Reliable data and effective disaster risk reduction policies are crucial to saving lives.”

#Trump 'Administration' slashes #Noaa
(those who inform you about the weather and warn you if you have to run away to save your life)
...
what are you expecting different from Trump? 🤣
A idiot who said during the #Covid pandemic that if they did less tests there was less Covid ?
If you do not be warned of Tornadoes and floods... will there be less tornades and floods?
The magas will surely say yes. 🤣

DOGE Is Making It Harder to Track Extreme Weather. What Could Go Wrong?

"These cuts threaten your budget, too. #Insurance companies rely heavily on #data gathered by #NOAA and the #US Geological Survey to assess wildfire, flood, wind and other risks. Some firms are warning that any interruption in data availability could drive insurance premiums for customers even higher."

"Mother Nature doesn’t care who you voted for. If there’s a #tornado headed your direction, you need access to early #warning systems. Gutting #NOAA means you won’t have that...

"NOAA is [already] down about 2,000 employees since January “as a result of the first round of the #Trump administration's cuts”..."This is not about efficiency & it's certainly not about waste, fraud & abuse. This is taking programs that people depend on to save lives & emasculating them"

"the #NOAA was preparing to lay off more than 1,000 workers...

People who live in #hurricane & #tornado country keep their “NOAA #weather radios” handy...

In theory, it sounds like one more bad thing to worry about. In practice, it’s much worse. We’ve just had a demonstration of precisely how effective NOAA is & what we stand to lose without it."

"WaPo reported that over 5 million Americans work in industries that could be impacted by retaliatory tariffs from China and Canada that just went into effect, and the vast majority of them live in counties that voted for Trump. New tariffs from those two countries primarily target the agricultural, manufacturing and energy sectors."

"Cuts that sound like a good idea to Elon Musk and Donald Trump have real impacts on the rest of us. That is only just beginning to dawn on people, who I’m sure you’re hearing, like I am, saying, “But I didn’t vote for this.” Trump 2.0, as I’ve written previously, isn’t a pick-your-own-adventure experience. You go to the carnival, you get all of the rides."

Joyce Vance comments on how much people through the center of the US relied on NOAA forecasts and warning with the massive storm system that has just caused so much damage and loss of life. Yet about 2,000 NOAA have been cut since January and there's no way the program will continue to function well with massive cuts in personnel.

If #Trump closes #NOAA then who’s gonna notify Americans when severe weather is coming their way? The National Weather Service (Falls under NOAA)
is the agency that issues severe weather alerts and warnings.

#Trump policies will kill Americans during severe weather outbreaks. Especially those #MAGA run states in the Southeast.

#DonnieDictator will be whining about the National Weather Service when Mar-a-Lago gets hit by a tornado.

Whoops too bad so sad, #Elon fired all the meteorologists.

Update. It's not enough for #Trump to …

* nominate #climate denialists to run key agencies like the #EPA and #NOAA
* remove climate-related words from govt web sites
* take down whole climate science sites and datasets
* defund climate research and researchers
* layoff scientists and civil servants with climate expertise
* repeal climate regulations
* eliminate 10 regional EPA offices, including the one in DC
* and plan to replace consensus climate findings with ideological cherrypicking as the foundation for policymaking …

… now his #FBI is freezing the assets of nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity, which have received EPA grants, alleging that they might be guilty of “possible criminal violations” including “conspiracy to defraud the United States.”

We need #NOAA now more than ever

The National Weather Service (NWS) and its parent agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), delivers remarkable value to the taxpayers. This efficiency can be demonstrated by its enormous return on investment. For example, the NWS costs only several dollars per citizen to operate each year, yet results in an estimated 10-100 times larger financial return that includes: improved citizen preparedness, improved transportation efficiency and safety, increased private sector profits, improved disaster prevention and mitigation, and impressive scientific research innovation that is significantly also contributed to by other related federal agencies, the private sector, and the academic research community.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is laying off over 1,000 more employees.

I have released episode 5 of the Raised Beaches Podcast, a podcast about paleoclimate, Earth science and global change! This episode's deep dive is on the greenhouse effect. Get it in the following link or wherever you get your podcasts.

In the intro, I talk about going to watch Sakurajima Volcano erupt, an earthquake I felt in January, my efforts to download data from NOAA and how US government agencies are being shut down, and a commentary on DEI.

I discuss in the deep dive how the greenhouse effect works, and why greenhouse gases are needed to keep the planet inhabitable. In the second part I discuss the history of the discovery of the greenhouse effect and how it got its name, and the greenhouse effect on Venus and Mars.

Finally, I discuss in the papers section a recent paper I am coauthor on, led by Alessio Rovere, about determining past sea level position from a beach ridge in Argentina. I discuss 4 other papers I am coauthor on.
