Scenes from the life of Christ, anonymous, c. 1435
Unfolding before us like a cartoon strip are eighteen scenes from the life of Christ. The painting thus becomes a visual résumé of Christian redemption: the salvation of mankind through the death and resurrection of God’s son. It begins at top left with the Annunciation and the Nativity and finishes at bottom right with the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.

Three Women and a Child by a Door, Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1645
Rembrandt took visible pleasure in drawing domestic scenes of women and children. Collectors, too, were clearly charmed by them. When the painter and collector Jan van de Cappelle died in 1679, he left behind an album containing 135 drawings ‘being the life of women with children by Rembrandt.’ Perhaps this splendid drawing was one of them.

Redingote or Great-Coat Dress, anonymous, c. 1786 - c. 1789
The origin of the redingote lies in long men’s coats with a cutaway front, the riding coat. It is a striking example of the influence men’s fashion exerted on women’s fashion. A redingote for ladies consisted of an overcoat or gown, and a loose skirt in a contrasting colour, which enhanced the coat-like effect. Olive green and pale pink were a popular combination at the end of the 18th century.
