It's nearly impossible to delete objects in Google Maps. A THREAD.

Situation 1:

I found a point duplicating recycling centre. Both points have different names so I chose to delete the one with a typo in it's name and with no reviews. I marked that point for deletion 7 times, each time Google rejected my edit after only a minute. I guess they use dumb bots to review edits. There is no way a human can review that quickly.

I'm an advocate for moving away from #USA based services and let's be honest, even I know it won't be 100% possible wired.com/story/trump-era-digi

#Apple users aside, even for #Android users it's not easy: some apps (e.g banking) are only on Play Store and you need #Google account. also, some products are #Amazon only too

until it changes, IMO better strategy is isolate accounts for US-based services and not use them for sensitive comms

Okay this might be a dumb question but is there a way to "degoogle" a #Google smartphone (a Pixel 6a)? It was a gift I received about two years ago and I don't buy new hardware as long as the old one still works. Unfortunately, I'm rather inexperienced when it comes to software stuff and I'd require a step-by-step guide (English or German) if it's possible at all :)

EDIT: Updated 1.1.1.1 (cloudflare) to 8.8.8.8 (Google) - thanks!

What a lot people don't realize is that this is default for all wifi on Android telling Google about every connection your device ever makes, where to and when.

You can change it though by going to Advanced setu[p, static IP and then DNS server (the 8.8.8.8 there by default, sneakily is Google - I suggest Quad 9, ie 9.9.9.9, but literally ANYTHING is better than Google)

The damage that Big Tech has done to news sites and media should not be underestimated.

It used to be that you would buy tech ads on tech media outlets. That was the best way to reach that audience. Now Big Tech makes a profile on you, which notes that you visit tech media sites. That information is then used when selling ads based on your profile.

The only real solution is to ban user profiling and go back to context sensitive ads. I think that kind of ads, as long as they are not using popups and the like, would be more acceptable to the public as well. People just do not like being tracked. Who would have thought?

I was a bit slow on this one, but I finally disabled Google Maps on my phone! I've been using Organic Maps (organicmaps.app/) for a little while now and I've had a great experience. I just have two issues:

1) Unless I download Organic Maps from the Google Play Store, I can't use it with Android Auto when I'm in a car. I want to disconnect from Google, so this is not ideal.
2) It seems like @organicmaps is the official Mastodon account, but they don't have their website verified.

It only took a few minutes to copy the places I had saved on Google Maps into a note in #Fossify Notes (fossify.org/). As usual, I'm finding that plain text notes are exactly what I need and give me a better experience than these bloated corporate apps.

***** Warning regarding AI contamination of #Google #Gmail search function *****

Google is changing the way message search works in Gmail, to use their defective AI systems to show you results in a way the AI thinks is best for you, meaning you could easily miss important messages when searching in Gmail when the AI screws up, which it will frequently do because it doesn't understand what your messages actually mean.

There will apparently be a way to switch to "Most recent" instead of "Most Relevant", but it will probably be on you to change this setting and I don't know at this time if this change will stick between sessions.

Google continues to ram their defective AI down people's throats.
