NIH Ends Future Funding to Study the Health Effects of Climate Change
—
It’s unclear whether the guidance will impact active grants, but it appears to halt opportunities for future studies. One climate health expert said the directive would have a “devastating” impact on much-needed research.
We ran a Reddit survey, and the results are shocking:
publishing scientific papers is prohibitively expensive.
$3K – $7.5K for open access in reputable journals
Top journals (e.g., Nature) charge $9K+
Even mid-tier journals cost $2K – $4K
PhD students rely on lab grants, while independents pay out of pocket.
Science is becoming pay-to-publish, blocking access to knowledge.
We need decentralized, affordable publishing.
@arstechnica this is really sad to me. #23andme did some fantastic #research, funded some really good studies, and provided a useful link between #genome and drug research. Too few people took the time to look into what it was they did and thought it was just another Ancestry.com site.

Human intelligence is declining dramatically - research. The election of demagogues and science haters in leading positions reinforces fears that people are getting really stupid. Technology and abundance of information are to blame.

"...if you can figure out how a rare disease mutation is working, you learn something about the normal proteins that all of us have," noted Dr Jonathan Miner, MD, PhD.
Insights into a rare disease known as SAVI have put a spotlight on a major immune trigger.

While I am reading an article about DeSci on medium, I found something interesting.
Young scientists are being left behind.
In 1980, 20% of NIH grants went to researchers 35 & younger. By 2014? Just 1%.
Meanwhile, funding for 66+ scientists keeps rising.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing but without support, young innovators leave science—taking their fresh ideas with them.
We’re losing the next generation.
While studying "Challenges and Timelines in Traditional Science Academia", I found something significant.
This table clearly shows that traditional publishing has some serious bottlenecks.
The main reason for the bottleneck is the unpaid peer review process.

The #DOGE cuts have already sparked #chaos & confusion within the sprawling agency, which provides care to more than nine million #veterans. The #Trump admn has said it plans to eliminate 80,000 VA #jobs, and a first round of terminations has halted some #research studies & slashed support staff."

Researchers in Australia, Europe, the UK, and Canada funded by the US are being asked if their work touches on topics like DEI or climate & environmental justice— topics denounced by the current administration.
It's another example of the deteriorating climate for the freedom of scientific practice in the US.
As someone studying climate history and politics with a focus on the United States, I find this deeply alarming.

Some new evidence that the functional importance of #ribosome heterogeneity is probably less common than previously believed. From the abstract:
"... This demonstrates that ribosome heterogeneity does not necessarily lead to functional specialization ..."
"• The Trump Administration targeted private universities — canceling $400 million in grants and contracts to Columbia University; pausing $175 million for the University of Pennsylvania; and Johns Hopkins cut research after losing $800 million in USAID grants
• Trump began dismantling Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and Radio Free Asia"
