Did You Work on a Terminated NIH Grant? ProPublica Wants to Hear From You.

The National Institutes of Health is canceling grants that are seen as conflicting with the Trump administration’s priorities. We want to hear from researchers who have been affected.

THEY'RE TRYING TO KILL EVERYBODY!

I'm listening to Alex Wagner's podcast from a couple of weeks ago talking about how the #DisasterPresidency is decimating the #EPA.

And I think…

They're also trying to shutdown #FEMA.

…and the #NIH.

…and put a lunatic in charge of #HHS.

…and ignored/dismissed #Covid.

…and are ignoring #BirdFlu. And #Measles.

…and dismiss #ClimateChange.

…and defunding #Superfund toxic waste cleanup.

…and in his first term, repealed laws against dumping toxic coal ash.

I signed up years ago for the #NIH #AllOfUs research program so the NIH has extensive data about me, including genetic data.
I trusted NIH then to keep my data secure and private, but I am obviously reconsidering that and thinking about withdrawing from the program.
I've asked All Of Us what assurances they can give that my data will remain safe, but I am skeptical that they'll have a persuasive answer.
Anybody else in this boat?

10,000 employees of #HHS & its agencies — #CDC, #FDA, #NIH, etc — are losing their jobs.
@statnews.com wants to give the public a closer look at what is being cut & what might be lost as a result.
If you're one of these workers, please tell us: statnews.com/2025/03/27/hhs-cu

STAT · Are you affected by the HHS cuts and restructuring?HHS is set to cut 10,000 jobs and consolidate divisions — have you been affected? @statnews would like to hear from you.

Another travesty:

"Our #NIH grant to discover coronavirus antiviral meds was terminated today.

We'd developed a better SARSCoV2 inhibitor than Paxlovid +we recently discovered an improved drug that looks better than Pfizer's own 2nd-gen inhibitor.

Part of a complete elimin of COVID-related research, incl. #LongCOVID.

The rationale given is that the pandemic is over.

Ppl are dying of #COVID at several times the rate of flu +still getting long COVID."

Huge facade for CDC headquarters against a beautiful sky.
Ars Technica · CDC rocked by top-level departures, loss of $11.4B in COVID fundingBy Beth Mole

"The Trump administration wants to spend more federal dollars replicating medical research. A key question will be which studies get repeated and, with limited resources, at what expense.

Why it matters: Many findings can't be replicated — a problem scientists say needs to be addressed. But it could also consume increasingly scarce resources as the administration cuts spending and freezes federal grants."

"The National Institutes of Health will no longer be funding work on the health effects of climate change, according to internal records reviewed by ProPublica…While it’s unclear whether the climate guidance will impact active grants and lead to funding terminations, the directive appears to halt opportunities for future funding of studies or academic programs focused on the health effects of climate change."

NIH Ends Future Funding to Study the Health Effects of Climate Change

It’s unclear whether the guidance will impact active grants, but it appears to halt opportunities for future studies. One climate health expert said the directive would have a “devastating” impact on much-needed research.

Update. New study: "#NIH investment in drugs approved from 2010 to 2019 was not less than investment by the #pharmaceutical industry, with comparable accounting for basic and applied research, failed clinical trials, and cost of capital or discount rates."

"There is widespread reporting of hundreds of grant cancellations at the National Institutes for Health (NIH)—with significantly more coming. This is in the context of ongoing funding freezes and chaotic layoffs of its expert staff, most of whom have PhDs in the fields for which they oversee review and funding processes."

Can We Still Govern? · Politicizing Science: The National Institutes for HealthBy Pamela Herd

There are many caveats (sample size, for ex) but this is very good: "Everyone in this study was destined to develop #Alzheimer’s disease and some of them haven’t yet,” said senior author Randall J. Bateman, a prof of neurology at WashU Medicine, in a statement from the university. “We don’t yet know how long they will remain symptom-free—maybe a few years or maybe decades.”

Hands off the #NIH!

"After a recent change by the Trump administration, the federal government no longer explicitly prohibits contractors from having segregated restaurants, waiting rooms and drinking fountains.

The segregation clause is one of several identified in a public memo issued by the General Services Administration last month, affecting all civil federal agencies."
