Buy European is not that easy because almost everything we can buy is produced out of Europe.

By example: I am looking for a new powerbank to charge phones.

I wrote to a lot of European companies but they all answered me their products are made in China.

Powerbanks made in Europe doesn’t exist. So buy European is in fact most of the time buy China.

I'm looking for a CRM system for a friend. Optimally from the EU, at worst with a datacenter in the EU.

Not wanting self hosting, we are looking for a SaaS provider.

The line of business is financial consulting, but I suppose that doesn't play a big role.

Do you have any tips on what to look for? Thanks

Starting My DeGoogle Journey! 🚀

I’ve decided to move away from Big Tech and focus on privacy. I’m currently loving @ProtonMail, Proton VPN, and Proton Drive—their commitment to privacy is outstanding.

I’m also making a conscious effort to use more EU-based software to avoid reliance on Big Tech and US companies.

Anyone else on this journey? What EU-based tools are you using? 🔒

In my opinion it is best to start your #boycottus journey by picking the low-hanging fruit first. By this I mean services that are not subject to #networkeffect or #vendorlockin. This gives you easy wins and keeps up the motivation. Good examples are backup and file synchronization services, calendar applications, navigation applications, chat applications for teams and project management software.

Migration to European alternatives is complicated by several things: networks effects, vendor lock-in and in lieue of those, just the amount of work needed to do the migration.

The BuyFromEU subreddit has grown quickly!

Purism is not needed; only persistence. if every EU citizen swapped *one* US brand for a European brand, that would be felt. Any change, multiplied by large numbers, is to be felt.

Talk to your family and friends about this doable goal.

Bonus: Once a person justifies switching one product, s/he is more likely to switch a second, so the effect is self-reinforcing.

The EU has had the "Digital sovereignity for Europe" think tank for a while:

europarl.europa.eu/thinktank/e

This has been a step in the right direction, but the dominance of US software companies means that most of the services we use are American, not European.

My third principle is "prefer european", or more generally "prefer software developed in other democratic nations". This is mainly to reduce the political weaponization risk arising from the US. An added benefit is that over time the european software companies might become competitive with those originating from the US.

In the recent months you have probably noticed that the US government is not trustworthy. It seems that US is rapidly sliding towards authoritarianism, oligarchy or even a sort of christo-fascism.

What should we, individuals and organizations located in democractic nations, do about all the dependencies we have to US-made or US-operated IT systems, software and services?
