The clear & straightforward answer is the lack of redundancy in key service provision.

Time was when systems would have back-up in place for emergencies, but once this started to be treated as a cost rather than a necessary investment in service continuity out the 'spare' capacity went!

One more cost of financialised management!

🇬🇧 To cross the river Sambre in Salzinnes, an original path must be used! In fact, these are the lock gates! 🙂 And, yes, I succeeded to include a train in this photo which is on the Namur - Brussels Railway (the line in the Valley goes to Charleroi). 🤭

In his first response to the #Trump #Putin call, President #Zelensky made clear he would support any end to #Russian #attacks on his country’s #energy #infrastructure.

That is no surprise because it was part of his own plan. But that’s the key point: the Russian offer is only part of the interim ceasefire plan the US and Ukraine had agreed.

Putin, he said, was still setting out “additional conditions” before he would agree a ceasefire and that showed Russia was “not ready to finish this war”.

Zelensky insisted Western powers would continue giving Ukraine military aid – despite Russian demands that they stop.

And he also said Russian demands for #Ukraine to be prevented from rearming during a ceasefire was just designed to weaken its armed forces.

As Zelensky gave his press briefing, #airraid sirens rang out across Kyiv. The irony was not lost on anybody including Zelensky who said it once again showed Russia could not be trusted.

“It’s super rare” to install Starlink or another #internet provider as a replacement for existing govt #infrastructure that has been vetted & secured, said Jake Williams, a VP for R&D at Hunter Strategy, a #cybersecurity consultancy. “I can’t think of a time that I have heard of that.”

The GOP voted against the bill, but have repeatedly... taken credit for its looming benefits among our broadly misinformed electorate... they’re now redrafting key components of the program to the direct benefit of Elon Musk. To ensure that the $42.5 billion taxpayer money was spent wisely, the bill included numerous provisions, including a recommendation that states try to prioritize the funding of fiber. Because higher capacity fiber is generally future proof, whereas satellite services like Starlink are congested, expensive, harm the environment, and are seeing slowdowns as the network’s customer base grows. The NTIA also included some bare bones requirements that ISPs taking taxpayer money try to ensure that any resulting service is made affordable to poor people. Big ISPs like Comcast and AT&T were quick to complain last year... the outrageous scandal that is trying to help poor people get online. These fairly sensible restrictions (which I suspect would have never been enforced in any serious way anyway) are being declared “woke” by the Trump administration, which is changing key parts of the grant program to the direct benefit of Elon Musk:
