#Trump stood by his #NationalSecurity adviser, #MichaelWaltz, Tues, calling him a “good man” a day after a report that he & other senior admin ofcls used the commercial messaging app #Signal to discuss secret #military plans for Yemen & inadvertently included a journalist in the group chat. During an interview Trump also said Waltz had “learned a lesson.”
…At least as far back as 2023 a #DoD memo, also seen by NPR, prohibited use of mobile apps for even "controlled unclassified information," which is many degrees less important than information about on-going #military operations.
There's…no precedent for the heads of #Defense, #State, #Intelligence & #NationalSecurity to be sharing such sensitive military intelligence in a forum that was known to be unsecured.
This is the most outrageous breach of #nationalsecurity that I can ever remember. The #FiveEyes #intelligence group should investigate whether the US maintains sufficient security over their collective intelligence data.
And if senior #US cabinet officials “loathe” #Europe and want Europe to pay them for unilateral #military actions that benefit global trade, the US regime are #mafia. The US has created a protection racket.

A reporter was added to a White House principals committee Signal group. No, that shouldn't happen, and government entities discussing classified information shouldn't be operating this way. Obviously.

But the app is used primarily for meeting planning and other logistical matters—not for detailed and highly confidential discussions of a pending military action. And, of course, I’ve never heard of an instance in which a journalist has been invited to such a discussion.
Conceivably, Waltz, by coordinating a national-security-related action over Signal, may have violated several provisions of the Espionage Act, which governs the handling of “national defense” information, according to several national-security lawyers interviewed by my colleague Shane Harris for this story."
