This newbie who just celebrated 100 days of #selfhosting was able to install #Apache and #Varnish on her #Ubuntu VPS (to prevent the "Mastodon Hug of Death" for link preview cards on her self-hosted Ghost blog). She's very proud of herself for all the sudo commands she successfully ran today. And she's weirded out talking about herself in the third person, so: I did it YAY.

Managed to get a (battered) second/third hand Dell XPS 13 for peanuts to replace the laptop with the bad hinge.
The screen is better than anything I've owned before by a country mile, it's powerful as fuck and it nearly fits in my pocket... And it's not gone to landfill
Quick tip! You can actually see the changelog details for Debian/Ubuntu packages, which includes security info, CVEs, package urgency, and a short description. Super helpful for figuring out if you need to patch right away or schedule downtime, especially if you're working with clusters. For example, here is how to see info about the nginx:

Have peered inside my miniature PC ahead of its #Ubuntu augmentation. It only has one M.2 slot for its #Windows 500GB SSD so the new drive will have to use a spare SATA bus. Partly to save money, partly because it’s just an experiment but mostly so I can distinguish the new drive from the old one, I’ve ordered a Samsung 250GB SSD. (I was also keen not to buy American, of course.) Next step will be preparing installation media for both OSes (in case something bad happens to the Windows 11 drive).

1. As an employee of #SUSE, I need to note that we actually have one completely European enterprise Linux distribution with over thirty [!] years of experience. We are perfectly ready to serve anybody who wants to switch from any US-centric distro.
2. Even if you don’t want to pay for it, I don’t think #Debian (although SPI is American), or #Ubuntu are exactly slaves to US whims (and I don’t even know what could be considered a domicile of #Arch).

Folks, I do need some advice related to #hardware please. My #homeoffice desk and it's surroundings are home to 2 machines running #Win10 , 1 machine running #PopOS and one machine running the #ubuntu office server. I am obviously running out of space for input devices. Does anyone have experience with #bidirectional #USB #switch|es for more than 2 machines and more than 2 devices per machine? I think I really do need one of those, but have no clue, which one to buy.

Připomělo mi to věci jako, že jsem 'dpkg-reconfigure console-setup' a zvolil nějaký font, u kterého byla poznámka, že chce #framebuffer . Od té doby například při zavření a otevření noutbúku mi to často na chvíli ukazuje krásné abstraktní pixel obrázky a pak to zčerná a pak se to vzpamtuje. Plus mi nějak připadá, že #ubuntu od té duby nějak "tuhne". Možná to souvisí s tím, že jsem zatím neudělal: #swap doporučuji 4 GB a na SSD. Asi je toho na IdeaPad 1 nějak moc...
