New: Fediverse Report 109
This week, an essay about #Bluesky's proposal for setting user preferences on their accounts. This allows people to indicate how they want their data to be handled off-protocol. I wrote about how the #fediverse can improve on this, using its strengths of many different communities, each with its own culture and values.
Also:
- Next week is the digital conference @fediforum
- A research dataset to compare Threads and Mastodon users
I don't know if I'm late to this party, but apparently Bluesky Bridge neuters the "sign-in required" restriction set in original Bluesky account when making the author's posts available in Mastodon
"it's not a bug, it's a feature"
To leave it and get your #X #followers back to #BlueSky and #Mastodon, you can use the #OpenPortability from @davidchavalarias.piaille.fr on #Mastodon
This platform is open to everyone, feel free to use it (available in 7 languages so far) : http://OpenPortability.org

One of a number of take-aways from #ATmosphereConf —
I felt like Paul Frazee (from Bluesky Org) was encouraging people deploy their own relays.
And, to think of the Bluesky Firehose Relay of everything — as a temporary thing to use, when first developing you app or platform. And then later, to deploy your own relay.
hoo-boy.
Apparently, Pete Hegseth included the editor of The Atlantic in a text chain wherein he and other Trump admin officials discussed Yemen war plans

You raise an interesting point that with platforms that throttle engagement via algorithm the users do not necessarily even know when they are being shadow banned or other subjects amplified.
Have no idea why people put so much unearned trust into #Bluesky when they are demonstrably lying about this whole decentralized nonsense. Suppose it is Jay Grabber's personality and charm, but seriously wake up folks! We don't have the luxury of screwing this up again.
So, I posted the photo where I'm holding up a #FreeMahmoudKhalil sign on #BlueSky... 2 reposts! And they were both my friends irl. So yeah. Tell me that Blue Sky isn't mucking about with the algorithms? They most certainly are! But I'll stay on it just to keep up with #MaineProtests. Anyhow, now we know. Proving that the #Fediverse is the place to be!
What are all the "accidental" characters of Decentralized Social-Media (DeSo)?
• Goosetopher
• John Mastodon
• Nicole the Fediverse Chick
• Pixel Fred
Anything else?
These days... I don't see much by way of a #music #community on #Bluesky.
If anything, it's just an onslaught of people telling me how great they are, avoiding conversations that would paint them in a bad light and promoting poorly evidenced 'chat-pods'.

Barack #Obama joins #Bluesky - https://techcrunch.com/2025/03/23/barack-obama-joins-bluesky/ "Other U.S. politicians are already active on Bluesky, including well-known names like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Al Green, Gavin Newsom, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez" #aoc

@boris (one of the organizers) is talking in front of the audience. (Boris and I are both from Vancouver.)
I see Fediverse people here. For example, @damon (of We Distribute fame) is sitting next to me.
As opposition accounts on X are suspended in Turkey at this critical juncture in their political struggles (https://www.politico.eu/article/musks-x-suspends-opposition-accounts-turkey-protest-civil-unrest-erdogan-imamoglu-istanbul-mayor/), perhaps now is a good time to encourage our friends here on #Threads and #Bluesky to at least have an escape plan. Pack a social media emergency go bag by creating a Mastodon/Fediverse account (https://joinmastodon.org/) and start using it, at least as a secondary platform.
