Have peered inside my miniature PC ahead of its #Ubuntu augmentation. It only has one M.2 slot for its #Windows 500GB SSD so the new drive will have to use a spare SATA bus. Partly to save money, partly because it’s just an experiment but mostly so I can distinguish the new drive from the old one, I’ve ordered a Samsung 250GB SSD. (I was also keen not to buy American, of course.) Next step will be preparing installation media for both OSes (in case something bad happens to the Windows 11 drive).

Fedi, I know you are begging to answer this. What's a good #Linux distro for a retired non-techie who's only ever used windows?

I was just talking to my neighbor and he said he tried to upgrade from #windows 10 to windows 11 but got some message that his computer might not be compatible and might "lose services." If he can't upgrade to 11, I pitched him Linux as an alternative to buying a new computer because apparently support ends in October.

I've never been able to just record my #Windows desktop screen using the Xbox Game Bar, stupid video record button is always greyed out, but all the online tutorials for free screen recording says to use that even if not in a game.

I needed to use #microsoft authenticator app. on my phone, I reinstalled it (have used before) and in the signing in process the authenticator app *itself" did this . . .
This makes me wonder if they are actually doing #infosec or are just still ironing out the bugs in #windows 95

We did what we needed, over delivered and made it look good, probably taught them all kinds of basics on how to get CG projects done and everyone was happy.

We never heard from them again after that project. I dunno, they probably became big CG commercial producers or something afterwards. :)

It quickly was determined they had *no* idea what they were talking about or doing, and further discovered they had gotten this project through a contact at Microsoft, intended on doing it themselves, but didn't know how and then came to us. And didn't want Microsoft to know it was us executing and not them

One was frat boyish and the other explained all things with sound effects and gestures. so we called them "Sparky and Sonic Boy" behind their backs.

One of the strangest CGI project I've worked on was footage that played during the installation of Windows 95 on you computer. Animating and moving Windows logo elements. I assume it played millions of times, but probably watched by no one as they walked away and waited for the OS to install.

Two "producers" approached Rhythm and Hues with the project, as if it was a very prestigious thing and asked us all kinds of questions like "what format would you make it in?"

Sitting at my #Windows PC, I've been thinking about what my kid asked me recently - if I had #Apple's Messages, Notes and Reminders all perfectly integrated into individual client apps on Windows, would I still want to use the #Mac? I find myself right now wanting to send a couple of text messages to friends and not being able to without physically typing them on the phone. The Messages app is SO convenient. Do I buy a cheap #Macbook JUST for that functionality in this room?! HMM. 🤔

My dad is in his early 70s.

He’s always been into computers, but he’s used nothing but MS-DOS and #Windows since the 90s, and resisted change at every turn.

Last month he called me up to ask me about #Linux, package managers, and “the terminal”. He’s now installing Linux Mint on his friends’ computers so they don’t have to throw out perfectly good computers because Windows 11 won’t support them.

I’ve never been more proud.

What does this mean for me?
After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.

What can I do with my old computer?
Trade it in or recycle it with local organizations.
